Álvaro Sotillo ( b. 1946 ). Venezuelan graphic and book designer.
Between 1962 and 1969, he studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas Cristóbal Rojas and the Instituto de Diseño Neumann in Caracas.
He worked for seven years at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Caracas under the direction of Miguel Arroyo, then his design training continued in a very close working relationship with his master Gerd Leufert ( Lithuania, 1914 – Caracas, 1998 ) for more than 10 years. Since 1975, Sotillo's editorial work has been recognized in the German competitions “Stiftung Buchkunst” ( Best Book Design From All Over the World ) and the “International Book Art Exhibition”, where the following three works stand out: “Golden Letter” La Emblemática de Gerd Leufert ( 1985 ); Diccionario de Historia de Venezuela second edition ( 1999 ), and Geohistoria de la sensibilidad en Venezuela ( 2008 ). In 2005, he received the “Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig.”
Since 1997, he has been a member of the AGI ( Alliance Graphique Internationale ). He currently works in his studio VACA and conducts research through the Laboratorio de Tipografía de Caracas ( LabTipCCS ).
